CBS 60 Minutes: "Suicide or Homicide?"
Wrongful death investigation of Captain Gordon Hess
The CID Investigation maintains that the death was a suicide. The AFIP maintains that their review indicates Suicide. However, there were various opinions and reviews and information which controverted the Army's CID Investigation's conclusion of suicide. All of the independent Investigators and Forensic Pathologists that reviewed this case were in agreement with the consultants hired by the family that the death of National Guard Captain Gordon Hess was more consistent with HOMICIDE then SUICIDE.

This was a classic EQUIVOVAL DEATH INVESTIGATION in which either party could not with any degree of medical certainty determine the cause of death. This tragic death should have been classified as "Undetermined".

This is the first time The Texas Rangers invited an outside contractor to present Homicide School exclusively for the Rangers.

Wrongful Death Consultation
Captain Gordon Hess was found with multiple stab wounds to his body. He had suffered 20 stab wounds to the chest. Two had penetrated his heart and four had penetrated his lungs. There were a total of 20 stab wounds to his chest, and six stab wounds to his neck. The U.S. Army declared the death of Captain Gordon Hess a suicide. The family of Gordon Hess requested an independent review and analysis of his death. Based on the preliminary review of the autopsy report and materials available for review, I find that the circumstances surrounding Captain Gordon Hess's death are higly suspicious and NOT consistent with the Military's finding of suicide. The consultant is collaborating with Dr. Dominick J. DiMaio, former Chief Medical Examiner for the City of New York as well as other colleagues in the field of forensic pathology and homicide investigation.

In my professional opinion, the death of Gordon Hess is more consistent with HOMICIDE than SUICIDE. However, I reserve the right to amend my opinions in the event additional evidentiary material becomes available.
