PRACTICAL HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION:
Tactics,Procedures, and Forensic Techniques, Third Edition

Return to Book Information

"I was invited to review this excellent presentation by the Author and a colleague of his when attending the American Academy of Forensic Science Meeting in February 2004. 1 felt daunted at the prospect, particularly when I saw the size of the production but having read all 860 pages of the book I am most enthusiastic to have the privilege of presenting this review."

"The Author is well known in his Police circles having spent some 25 years with the New York Police in this particular role of investigation of homicides. Hence it is no surprise to find that the result of his endeavors is a book which is in the first place, so easy to read, but secondly so cleverly constructed as to both inform the reader but also to be so available as a reference manual."

"For this review my approach was to read it on retiring at night and I found it extremely readable, as I have just stated. To me there is no superfluous padding and the information conveyed is very explicit. The themes are well illustrated either by case reports or by photographic images and these aides are clearly presented without distracting from the impact of the text."

"For its use as a reference book I would highlight the fact that the major principles of crime scene investigation are reiterated in most of the chapters. Please don't think that this becomes a boring, repetitive text ? far from it. The important lessons are highlighted relevant to each chapter. The obvious example is the necessity of preservation of a crime scene, which as we all know is so vital to the successful investigation of a major crime."

"As a Practitioner in Clinical Forensic Medicine and Forensic Pathology for over 40 years I found it gratifying that, although this is an American based text, the details in the outline of procedures is by no means contradictory to the principles we follow in Australia and hence I feel that it is a very valuable addition to any library interested in assisting in Forensic Medicine, no matter in which discipline."

"I would commend it as a very readable, well set out volume which I am sure would prove its use in many instances. In the later chapters the detail with which he deals with profiling (always a contentious issue) is unbiased, descriptive and can only be described as a constructive explanation of the value of a profiler in many instances of crime, particularly serial killers."

"The book is easy to read, concise and well presented."

Dr. William P. Ryan, O.A.M.
Standish Medical Centre
33 Berry Street
NOWRA, NSW

"Each chapter has invaluable information is relevant for criminal justice students, professional homicide investigators having years of experience, novice investigators, forensic scientists and, perhaps writers who are looking for a knowledgeable resource."

"Although some subjects are covered in depth--based on their importance in routine investigations -- others cover topics that investigators should be aware of, so that when alternative investigative avenues are required there is an information resource available."

"Chapter covering, "DNA analysis, give important background information that will help the investigator understand why this is such an indispensable forensic tool and how it fits into investigative sequence."

Dr. Robert C. Shaler, Ph.D., Chief Serologist, Office of the Medical Examiner, New York City

"Vernon Geberth is probably the most gifted individual on the planet in teaching homicide investigation and doing it brutally honest. "

"God bless Vernon."

Michael Overbey Commander of Investigative Services Division. Butts County, Georgia

"This book is an excellent reference source for anyone responsible for the investigation of deaths." The expanded chapter..."suicide by cop": a police colloquialism used to describe occasions when individuals bent on self-destruction engage in life-threatening criminal behavior in an attempt to force police officers to kill them. This is a relatively new phenomenon confronting law enforcement officers, and Geberth covers all aspects of this unusual behavior, including clinical interpretations and the psychopathology of suicide-by-cop scenarios, as well as investigative considerations."

"This edition is written in an engaging style that helps to guide both the novice and the experienced investigator through the often bizarre and unsettling subject matter."

Jeanine Pirro, District Attorney, Westchester County, White Plains, New York

"I recently completed my review of Mr. Vernon J. Geberth's book, "Practical Homicide Investigation - THIRD EDITION. In my 21 years of law enforcement experience I have yet to have a law enforcement reference impact my career as this book and Vernon's previous editions have. Without a doubt, it is my opinion that this is the most comprehensive book on the subject of homicide investigation. This THIRD EDITION is truly an indispensable reference that can only be described as 'The Bible of Homicide Investigations'."

Lieutenant Rueben A. Puente, Arlington, Texas Police Department

"This Third Edition represents a significant expansion to the most complete and detailed reference book available to any professional charged with the responsibility of death investigations. Included is an invaluable new chapter dealing with the responsibility of the investigator when making death notifications and the dynamics of dealing with the surviving family as secondary victims."

"...Mr. Geberth continues to present the most up-to-date material in a clear, concise and thorough manner. Practical Homicide Investigation: Tactics, Procedures, and Forensic Techniques THIRD EDITION continues to be "The Bible" for anyone responsible for conducting homicide investigations. My congratulations to Vernon Geberth for his continued work on behalf of all victims."

Chief John Dotson, Sparks, Nevada Police Department; Former Homicide Commander Wichita, Kansas Police Department

"This up to date text is a must read for ALL investigators world-wide, whether they be assigned to a homicide bureau on a full time basis or only occasionally investigate sudden and violent deaths. In addition to his broad knowledge on the subject, Vernon Geberth has probed the minds of countless homicide investigators, identification officers, forensic pathologists, prosecutors, and numerous experts to put before us a complete resource text, second to none. Of crucial importance is his frequent use of interesting and revealing case studies to clearly illustrate, or reinforce a particular technique..."

"The material collected in this book cannot be found elsewhere in such a single, well laid out reference text. I would strongly suggest investigators read the book and leave it close to their desks as a resource for the future. No one person, bureau or police department could ever be expected to collect this important information on their own. Vernon Geberth has done it for you, please make us of it."

Superintendent Rod Piukkala, Peel Regional Police, Brampton, Ontario, Canada

"State of the art text-nothing like it in the field."

"My colleagues in the legal profession have accorded it a place of respect and authority in homicide trials."

"Narcotic related homicides now account for a significant percentage of all homicides and have moved out of the inner cities into suburban and rural areas of the country."

"Perhaps the single most important addition to Geberth's text is the chapter on Death Notifications, a duty that police have not traditionally carried out very well. Notification to the Homicide victim's family is an extremely sensitive function and Geberth's checklist and guidelines are first rate."

".....victims are treated terribly, particularly in the courts. Geberth recognizes this shabby treatment and suggests that the investigator take charge and "guide" the survivors through the process - fill the vacuum that the courts create for the victim."

"The Third Edition of Geberth's book is a testament to the author. He is not really a "former" Homicide detective and commander. He still practices his craft by training, visiting crime scenes, consulting with investigators, researching new technology and picking the brains of the countless practitioners he lists in the book's Acknowledgments."

"It offers the tried and true roadmap of professional death investigation."

"It should be the primary tool of every Homicide investigator and required reading for every prosecutor."

Terence McCann Attorney at Law Former Lieutenant Chief of Detective's Office City of New York Police Department

"I anticipate using "MY CRIME SCENE BIBLE" with great confidence. An ongoing use of this information will greatly enhance any users ability to successfully solve cases."

J.L. Phillips, Senior Trooper Martinsburg, West Virginia State Police

"The book should also be on the desk of every seasoned Homicide Detective. It is a reminder of all the things we know, but often forget to do in the complex task of a Homicide investigation. The book sets the standard that should be used to evaluate every investigation."

Det. Mark Ayotte Boise, Idaho City Police Department Violent Crimes Unit

"His authoritative approach helps all of us work our way through any investigation. "It is an excellent guide to all the critical issues for the rookie, as well as for the more experienced investigator."

"The colored pictures are invaluable because they allow the investigator to see the details first hand in a perspective that black and white photographs cannot." "This edition should be required reading for anyone who is considering a career in Homicide and /or medicolegal death investigation, and it will prove to be a mainstay of any investigator's library."

Spencer R. Smith, Detective/Chief Deputy Medical Examiner Jackson County, Oregon

"The techniques he recommends and pitfalls he warns against are gleaned from years of successful investigative work."

"Entirely up to date , especially the section on human sexuality and sexual deviance." "Today,"coming out of the closet" is a common social fact. The opening of the closet door, with its resultant crimes of passion that are endemic to this rapidly emerging population makes Geberth's comprehensive grasp of this subject particularly useful."

Edwin T. Dreher, Deputy Chief Inspector.(Ret) Office of the Chief of Detectives New York City Police Department

"Around the squad rooms and across the country, this is referred to as "the book on Homicide."

Michael D. Gambrill, Chief of Police Baltimore County Police Dept. (Ret.)

"The third edition is by far the author's very best, and I suspect, will be ranked as the Encyclopedia Britannica of Criminal Investigation."

Robert C. Mehl, Detective, Quincy Police Dept. Quincy, Illinois

"The most complete "how to" book on the market today." "The key to this book is the term "practical."

"The key to this book is the term "practical."

"Anybody that is charged with the responsibility of investigating Homicide should be very familiar with this book."

SA Jon D. Perry Psychological Profiler, Virginia State Police, Sgt. (Ret). Kansas City, Missouri

"There is a wealth of photographs throughout the book to assist the reader in understanding the essential information and concepts by visualizing actual cases thereby confirming the old adage that, "one picture is worth a thousand words."

"The addition of the Staged Crime Scene section is an important addition to the book because it alerts the Homicide investigator to always consider the possibility that the crime scene may have been altered and if not identified may actually cause miscarriages of justice."

Frederick T. Zugibe, M.D. Ph.D. Chief Medical Examiner, Rockland County, New York

"As a laboratory supervisor, I would recommend this book as the best way to improve skills and techniques for all serious minded Homicide and crime scene investigators.

"The most comprehensive publication ever written on Homicide Investigation. The material is logically organized, concise and easy to understand which also allows the book to be utilized as a QUICK REFERENCE ENCYCLOPEDIA for any professional concerned with death investigation."

Thomas Nye, Captain Warwick P.D. Warwick, Rhode Island

"There is probably no greater responsibility in law enforcement than the investigation of the "Ultimate Crime." "There is nothing greater that can be stolen from someone than life itself." "With this great responsibility comes a need for great skill, attention to detail, and technical expertise."

"The "Checklists" provided by the author should be adopted by every agency, and copies should accompany patrol officers and/or detectives to every death scene. Not even the sharpest investigator can remember everything, every time. These checklists can help eliminate costly oversights in an investigation."

John T. Fallon, County Detective Montgomery County Detective Bureau, Montgomery County District Attorney's Office, Montgomery, Pennsylvania

"PHI is a tour deforce of the Genre. It is clinically relevant, practical and accurate." "Leaving no stone unturned the author's inclusion of narcotics related homicides and collection of evidence include mandatory reading for investigators, especially regarding the practical application of DNA technology and interpretation of results. This material is medically, scientifically and forensically accurate and updated with latest legal standards for admissibility."

Dr. Ronald Turco, M.D. P.C., Forensic Psychiatrist Beaverton, Oregon

"I was particularly pleased to see the added concentration on the psychological aspects of Homicide investigation."

Raymond M. Pierce Detective NYPD coordinator NYC Homicide Investigator's Course

"In the Third Edition Geberth proves that "old dogs CAN learn new tricks." The Section on DNA takes a complicated and confusing subject and translates it into easy to follow and understandable language." "Anyone needing to learn the short history of DNA from application, collection, testing and admissibility need only read Vernon's chapter."

Captain Thomas J. Cronin, Chicago Police Department, Research and Development Division Chicago, Illinois

"As a Deputy Chief with forty years experience, I am convinced that this book is an absolute must-read for all Homicide investigators."

Lt. Colonel James J. Hackett, Deputy Chief of Police, City of St. Louis, Missouri

"Vernon Geberth doesn't tell you about a Homicide scene. He puts you in the middle of it. You see it. You feel it. You smell it. You hear it. You live it. His third edition is the best yet."

Larry Welch, Director Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Topeka, Kansas

"Third Edition of Practical Homicide Investigation is the desk top reference for insights into those first encounters or to reinforce/double check the Detective's own observations or findings.

"The Author has done a great job of not only compiling the "meat and potatoes" of Homicide Investigations from experienced sources, but offers the latest in forensic techniques. This easily referenced book is a must for all Homicide Units."

Ray Biondi, Lt. (Ret.) Homicide Bureau Sacramento County, California, Sheriff's Department

"For the young investigator or the investigator to be, this book is a quick education in the world of death." "For the experienced investigator, give yourself a break and refer to the book frequently."

"PRACTICAL HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION, Third Edition is a must for any sincere investigator and should be placed between your penal code and policy/procedures manual. Be sure to put your name on the book or it will disappear quickly."

Wade Ford, Lt. Texas Dept. Of Public Safety Training Academy, Austin, Texas

"We all know a Homicide investigation can be extremely complex at times. This book is a gently reminder that sometimes we complicate issues because we "overlook the obvious."

"That is the main reason I would like to refer to this book as the ABC's OF HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION. This book starts with "A", involving the detectives in charge of the investigation. This is a more complex alphabet dealing with all the different death scenes a detective may run across. It details the specifics a detective will encounter while fulfilling his duties. This book will also walk a Technical Investigator through the ABC's of processing the crime scene."

Captain Johnny Kuhlman, Oklahoma City P.D. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

"Detectives are never really prepared for the unpleasant task of death notification. This chapter sufficiently covers this most necessary part of the investigation."

"We have all seen the book "Final Exit" and yes, this was included as was the common phenomenon of suicide by cop." These are all real incidents that occur in every community and cause a great deal of publicity."

Lt. Jim Farris City of Phoenix P.D. Phoenix, Arizona

"As the Commanding Officer of the Boston Police Homicide Unit for seven years, I have never read a book which is more practical and comprehensive regarding Homicide and death investigation."

Edward J. McNelley, Detective Captain Boston Police Department, Massachusetts

"Simply put, this book provides the information today's investigators need. No other book comes close."

"A book that makes you think about the subject. A book that not only tells you what homicide is, but answers the questions about the victim and the suspect in an understandable way for investigators. By far the best book available on Homicide investigation."

Marvin Skeen, Det. (Ret.) Bellevue P.D. Investigator/Analyst Homicide Investigation Tracking System, Washington State Attorney General's Office

"This particular edition has illustrated a very difficult and important role of Homicide Investigations, and the role each investigator should play in the field. Seasoned investigators as well as the beginner can utilize this text and investigate a Homicide from start to finish following the guidelines described by Geberth."

"The chapter on Final Exit Suicide investigations if very rewarding and helpful. Due to the recent phenomenon of this death, and with the media covering the assisted suicides, this is an investigators dream for determining the prime question. Is it a suicide or murder?"

Joseph D. Beffa, Lieutenant St. Louis, Missouri P.D.

"What can I say besides "WOW!" You have read the rest, now read the best. If Vern's Second Edition was considered the Bible, then the Third Edition must be the New Testament of the Bible."

"Every police officer, supervisor, and needless to say investigator should possess a copy of Vern's new book. No where in law enforcement literature is there a book that can compare to this piece of work. The book possesses and imparts the information that a police officer, responding to a scene; a supervisor, supervising a scene, a detective, investigating a scene; or a detective supervisor, managing a crime scene needs."

Nicholas Theodos, Detective Sergeant New Jersey State Police Major Crime Unit

"If there was ever any doubt, it is dispelled by Vernon Geberth's third edition. Practical Homicide Investigation is the mandatory companion for the homicide investigator, whether novice officer or seasoned veteran. Geberth approaches homicide investigation training like he approaches his crime scenes: methodically. First you need to learn what the offender did (and did not do!), and how he did it-- reconstructing the crime--and then, jumping into the offender's shoes, try to glean an understanding of why he did it (i.e., motive). Practical Homicide Investigation provides not only the what-to-do's (and what not to do's!) of investigation as well as the how-to-do them, but takes that extra important step and explains why all the fuss about these details."

"His many years of experience with murders in New York City have taught him well. That he was a keen and competent student is evident from this book. More important, however, is the fact that Geberth himself recognizes the necessity of "keeping up." As this latest edition reveals, he hasn't stopped learning about homicide and the best ways to investigate it. In this way, Geberth shows himself to be the best kind of teacher, continuing to develop his own expertise. We are advised of the need for ongoing training in the many fields that impact on homicide investigation. Advances in forensic science and criminalistics levy an increasing burden s)n today's investigators to become conversant with how behaviors at the crime scene translate to useful findings in the laboratory. It is, as Geberth says, incumbent upon the homicide investigator to keep up with the criminals--who are busy educating themselves about police procedures, forensic evidence, and the like."

"Geberth's talent is to take the complex process of homicide investigation and break it down into manageable components. The importance of the work is in the fastidious attention to the details of investigative procedures and in the recognition that failing to heed the smallest details (practically or politically speaking) can completely derail a case. Throughout the book the investigator is impelled to control whatever can be controlled at a crime scene and also to be vigilant to recognize that which cannot. Footprints in snow have a lifetime of their own, quite independent of an investigator's needs. Geberth's text speaks to the necessity of common sense. Neglecting the obvious while pursuing esoteric possibilities is likely to hurt if not defeat the investigation."
"Geberth shoots straight from the hip--and he knows homicide. His experience tells him, and he tells us, that homicides are solved by the systematic consideration of the totality of the evidence related to the crime--forensic and behavioral evidence. His third edition makes this point ever more clear. Geberth is to be applauded for producing a book that lives up to its title. It is decidedly practical in its orientation, and, practically-speaking for the homicide investigator, it is a necessity.

Candice Skrapec (Criminal Psychologist)

"The combination of [Practical Homicide Investigation, Third Edition] and the new Practical Homicide Investigation Checklist and Field Guide makes this the most complete manual on homicide investigations in the country. It should not only be mandatory reading for new investigators, but it is a great reference manual for even the most seasoned homicide investigator. This is must a for every investigator and belongs in every homicide office."

Deputy Chief Kyle Edwards, Investigative Services Division, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department

"Vernon Geberth has done it again! The newest (3rd) edition of his treatise, Practical Homicide Investigation, published by CRC Press, expands on the already voluminous second edition, by the enlargement of several chapters and the introduction of several new chapters dealing with death notifications, suicide, homosexual homicides and evidence collection. In fact, almost all of the topic areas seem to be significantly augmented. This need to be comprehensive seems almost to be a compulsion with Geberth, who's newest work now contains over 900 pages of some of the most explicit and authoritative material on the subject of homicide ever to be assembled!
Geberth also seems to be well aware of the increasing role which science plays in the processing of the modern crime scene and the possibilities of the future role of science, as instrumentation and computer databases join in assisting the investigator in the identification of suspects. In this third edition, Geberth has upgraded information on the technological explosion in forensic science and describes new investigative possibilities which can simplify the life of the homicide detective. Practical Homicide Investigation 3rd edition can also be a valuable resource for crime lab personnel who have crime scene processing responsibilities. The interdisciplinary approach allows for forensic scientists to be aware of what the talented crime scene investigator has always known: crime scenes can disclose methods, methods suggest motives and motives identify suspects. Having investigators as well as scientists on the "same page" at the homicide scene creates a symbiosis which can only benefit all concerned."
"Overall, Practical Homicide Investigation 3rd edition, is a master work, containing an overwhelming amount of information, written with a style which is amicable to police investigators and scientists, alike. This book should be on the bookshelf of everyone who is professionally involved with any aspect of homicide investigation"

Frederick C. Drummond Chief, Forensic Science Services, Westchester County, New York Forensic Science Laboratory

"Mr. Geberth has taken his first two editions of Practical Homicide Investigation and made a current volume that is applicable to today's world of criminal investigation. He has also made the 3rd. edition very comprehensive, giving the criminal investigator the knowledge necessary to conduct a methodical and thorough investigation, avoiding the pitfalls often present in a major criminal case.
As a law enforcement officer, homicide investigator, and criminal investigation and an instructor at a community college, I have had the opportunity to use the knowledge obtained from Mr. Geberth and his Practical Homicide Investigation texts regularly. The text is one of the few that addresses the problem of homicide investigation in a realistic manner, preparing the student for the often difficult and gruesome task of homicide investigation.
Mr. Geberth has earned the respect of thousands of law enforcement personnel across the country from his numerous seminars on homicide investigation. He has done this by his extensive career in law enforcement, his pursuit of higher education and his willingness to give credit to criminal investigators that share experience and knowledge in the field of criminal investigation. As a lecturer and as an author, Mr. Geberth has the integrity and credibility among our nations law enforcement personnel to be considered "The Expert" in the field of homicide investigation and his book Practical Homicide Investigation, "The Bible of Homicide Investigation."
