"Unlike many investigators, Geberth has paid close attention to the scientific literature on the PCL-R conception of psychopathy and, by integrating it with his own extensive experience and clinical insights, has produce and outstanding chapter on practical applications to criminal investigation. His discussions are right on the mark, as is his appreciation of the behavior of psychopaths during the investigative process. Some investigators with the FBI and intelligence agencies in North America and several other countries currently are developing their own protocols for applying psychopathy to crime scene analysis, interviewing, and intelligence work. Their efforts are consistent with Geberth's discussions and advice, and there is little doubt that they will derive considerable benefit from his work. Indeed any investigator who deals with psychopaths in any capacity would do well to become familiar with his work."

"If you're involved with any sort of sexual homicide case, order this book immediately, as it is far and away the most in depth work focused solely on sex-related murder."
PI Magazine, Sept./Oct. 2004
" Vernon's new textbook entitled Sex-Related Homicide and Death Investigation: Practical and Clinical Perspectives is an incredible 800-page book that covers a number of subject far beyond [the author's} Practical Homicide Investigation. His vast investigative experience is evident in the clear explanations he offers regarding how the mind of a sexual predator functions and the most recent technology available to bring these unique and very difficult investigations to a successful conclusion."
New York Post
"Vernon Geberth has written a new testament to the "Bible of homicide investigation." The literature in this area has been sparse and difficult to locate at best. In this book Vernon draws together many various disciplines to make a complete resource and reference book for investigators and prosecutors. "Several experienced prosecutors in our Violent Crimes division have reviewed this book. All have been impressed with the content but more importantly they have been impressed with the context. They way the material is presented and information woven through the various disciplines has shed new light on the subjects and presented new ways to prosecute and investigate these cases. "As the prosecutor in the David Parker Ray case, which is featured in Chapter 12, I wish I had had this book as a reference before that case broke in 1999. Had I been so fortunate we, prosecutors and investigators, would have saved ourselves hundreds of man-hours in research, evaluation and investigative time. Our investigation and prosecution would have been more focused and directed. All of us would have had a better understanding of this type of crime and what was going to be needed to see the case through to a successful conclusion. As opposed to trying to re-invent the wheel in a type of case we had never before encountered, we could have followed the road map. It is unfortunate that cases like these are occurring with more and more frequency. However, it is now very fortunate that we have a resource and reference book to draw upon should we encounter these monsters in our jurisdiction. Vernon's new investigative text, Sex-Related Homicide and Death Investigation: Practical and Clinical Perspectives draws together countless sources from literature and investigative files into one authoritative source. This book is a "must have" (not just "must read") for any detective or prosecutor who deals with these types of cases."

"In this 'no excuses' analysis of the psychology of evil, Vernon brings his extensive expertise and knowledge to dissect the thought processes that underlie these sex offenders. By detailing the case histories of specific murders as well as the practical knowledge he has gleaned from thousands of investigations, Vernon provides critical information that can explain the inexplicable at crime scenes. No police academy, police department, or prosecutor's office should be without this important and informative work. If murder, as Shakespeare suggests, does speak, Vernon has provided all of us with the amplifier through which we will hear its voice."

"Vern Geberth describes the evil of the sexual criminal and outlines the investigative path to that criminal's identification, apprehension and prosecution. He brings to this publication the same style of common sense, practicality and graphic simplicity that characterized Practical Homicide Investigation. It is, quite simply, the best and most thorough text on the subject of sex-related homicide I have seen. - From the Foreword by Larry Welch, Director, Kansas Bureau of Investigation "Commander Geberth has succeeded in the impossible task of taking his thirty-five years of experience investigating literally thousands of homicides and consulting nationwide with experts in forensic science and criminal investigation, and making a comprehensive and practical resource text that will serve as an investigative guide and clinical reference. a "must-buy" for the professional involved with the investigation and prosecution of sex-related homicides."

I first met Vernon in 1994 when I attended his Practical Homicide Investigation. I believe that every police officer in that class benefited from Vernon's knowledge, experience, wisdom and his compassion for the victims of violent crimes and their surviving family members. His motto, "We work for God!" says it all.
I was fortunate to attend his Advanced Homicide Investigation in 1998. During that five-day class, myself along with a few other police officers were lucky to join Vernon for dinner each night, which is often more educating than the class itself. Since that time, I feel lucky to have become one of Vernon's many friends and whenever he is in the area we get together.
I conferred with Vernon about a Serial Rapist case in I had investigated in 1999 and told him about The Rapist's Journal that was recovered. Vernon requested an opportunity to review the Journal and after his review he advised me that he wanted to include this information case in his new Sex-Related Homicide and Death Investigation textbook. I was honored and contacted the other seven Detectives who were involved in the investigation. We all felt same, "If anyone would be able to present the Journal information in an educational and instructional format, Vernon could and would."
Vernon would call me with various questions regarding the investigation and the significance of the Journal entries as they related to the actual sexual assaults and then requested copies of the actual case reports from all of the jurisdictions to assess and analyze the Journal. When he advised me that, "You guys have a entire chapter!" You can't imagine how proud my colleagues and I felt.
In June of 2003 when I first read Sex-Related Homicide and Death Investigation, I was amazed at the way Vernon was able to explain the entire four and one-half year investigation into one chapter. I sincerely hope that it will assist other investigators who may encounter a similar case. I'm proud to be considered one of Vernon's many friends and very proud to be one of his many "Disciples."
Vernon, don't ever quit what you are doing! God Bless! And you're right my friend, "We do work for God!"

Vernon Geberth has done it again with this all-encompassing guide to sex-related death investigation, liberally illustrated from Autoeroticism to Zoophilia, from DNA to Psychiatry. This work provides the clearest demonstrations yet available as to how the death scene should be interpreted and processed, what should be collected, and who could have done it and why. To ensure a level playing field, this should be required reading for police, prosecutors, defense attorneys, medical examiners, crime lab personnel, criminal justice students, and judges.

Sex Related Homicide and Death Investigation is Vernon Geberths' latest contribution to the law enforcement and criminal justice community. This book should be considered a sequel to Mr. Geberths' first book, Practical Homicide Investigation, and is a viable and mandatory investigative tool to any homicide, medicolegal, or sex crimes investigator.
Sex Related Homicide and Death Investigation covers the unusual aspects of investigating sex related crimes, which very often do not fit into nice, neat classifications or explanations of crime. Sex related crimes are controlled by the human imagination, and as we all know, the human imagination in limitless. Consequently, the motivation for sex related crimes are also limitless.
Mr. Geberths' credentials establish him as a leading authority in death and homicide investigations, as well as sex related crimes. In his latest book, Geberth outlines in easily understood terms, the basics of human sexuality and how the development of the human brain, both pre and post childbirth will have a profound effect on a persons physiological and biological sex drive in later years.
Mr. Geberth sites various research studies conducted by a variety of experts, as well as his own research, in attempt to explain normal human sexual behavior as well as sexual deviance. It is the recognition of sexual deviance, which enables the investigator to evaluate, "just exactly what took place," at the crime scene and to search for evidence, which may link more than one crime to the same offender. Vernon Geberths' book offers graphic examples of sexual deviance and what role it plays in a criminal investigation.
Sex Related Homicide and Death Investigation offers various investigative strategies to be used by the investigator in dealing with sex crimes investigations. It explains the extreme significance that fantasy takes place in sex related crimes, and how recognizing and identifying the fantasy is instrumental to completing a comprehensive investigation.
This book provides the investigator with a variety of checklists that can and should be used by any investigator to insure that all investigative avenues are covered. Additionally, the various chapters in Mr. Geberths' book, detail a wide variety of investigations, covering sexual sadism, sex related domestic violence murders, lust murders, serial murder, rape and sodomy orientated murder, sexual torture, and child sexual homicide cases, to name just a few. Auto-erotic fatalities are covered in detail as well as equivocal death investigations. Geberth provides various investigative considerations to the investigator to assure that the appropriate investigative conclusion is achieved.
Mr. Geberth brings the reader his own personal experiences as a New York City "murder cop," as well as case investigations submitted to him for consultation, and case investigations submitted by homicide and sex investigators nationwide. In usual Geberth style, he whole heatedly gives credit to the investigators whose investigations he provides and details as case studies in this book.
"Sex Related Homicide and Death Investigation" is presented in similar design as Practical Homicide Investigation. This book updates the reader in advances in new technologies, and their applications in law enforcement since the last printing of Practical Homicide Investigation. Geberth gives excellent case examples in the latest development of DNA technology in crime scene processing and the importance of DNA in sex crime investigations.
Various investigative analyses are included which detail the investigative assessment of both an offender and a crime scene. The importance of criminal profiling is stressed so that an investigator may identify the "signature aspect," of an offender in a criminal investigation. Recognizing and identifying an offenders "signature," is a crucial step in crime scene linkage. Mr. Geberth provides a stunning array of case investigations and clinical studies which explain the significance of crime scene linkage.
Sex Related Homicide and Death Investigation is a book every criminal investigator should read cover to cover, and refer to from time to time as an excellent source of investigative strategies. Vernon Geberth and his series of books continue to increase the knowledge of the law informant professional.

REFERENCE: Geberth VJ. Sex related homicide and death investigation: practical and clinical perspectives. Boca Raton: CRC Press. 2003.
Vernon Geberth, retired New York City Police Department Lieutenant Commander and editor of CRC Press' series, Practical Aspects of Criminal and Forensic Investigations, has given the law enforcement and wider forensic community a needed textbook, Sex Related Homicide and Death Investigation: Practical and Clinical Perspectives. Already Justifiably well known for his Practical Homicide Investigation: Tactics, Procedures, and Forensic Techniques, now in its third edition, and for his courses in homicide investigation, Geberth draws upon his considerable experience and that of myriad others in offering the reader a didactic and pragmatic new book in investigating sexual assault homicides.
Split into 14 chapters, Geberth offers perspectives into normal sexual development and sexual deviance, then segues into segments utilizing case studies in the dynamics of violence, developmental and family history of' perpetrators, police response, victimology, and other aspects of sexual assault and murder. Many stand to benefit front this text as the author delves into pragmatic crime scene investigation, collection and preservation of physical evidence, interpersonal dynamics of' perpetrator and victim, serial killers, and sex related child homicides and child abduction cases. The author also describes sex-slave torture cases and criminal personality profiling and signature crimes.
The text is filled with excellent advice throughout however, this reviewer has a few concerns he would like addressed in future editions. In chapter 6, Geberth writes, [ ...] homosexual cases often involve bite marks of the back, anus, shoulders, axillae (armpits, face, and scrotum) of the victim. Heterosexual cases usually involve t fie breasts and thighs." Such a statement needs a reference or attribution, but none is present. Particularly Unsettling is a statement in chapter 4 on "Sexual Asphyxia and Autoerotic Fatalities," regarding notification and advising the surviving family of the mode [manner] of death in autoerotic fatalities:
The official explanation of the circumstances of, the death is best undertaken with the assistance of' clergy or a professional practitioner, after considering the family's ability to cope with the facts of the case. However, it is important to note that each case and set of circumstances will dictate the proper courser of action. In some instances, I believe investigators who recognize what has happened may make a conscious decision to spare the family and allow them to believe the death to be a suicide. However, in the official police report the death should be properly classified as accidental. Under certain circumstances, this action might be an entirely appropriate alternative. I offer this personal advice as a veteran homicide cop. Whatever course of action you decide, "Just make sure you do the right thing."
This reviewer would maintain that under no circumstances should the investigator, no matter how well meaning, misrepresent the manner of death as "Suicide" in such an accidental autoerotic asphyxia. In all circumstances, "doing the right thing" would mean telling the truth. Not only would the labeling of such a death as suicide saddle the surviving family with another potentially equally burdensome grief, but such a misrepresentation would irreparably damage the investigator's integrity. What if' the family wishes to read the police report in the future? What if they should read the medical examiner's report? Far better advice would be to engage the surviving family with an experienced grief counselor who would be able to adequately explain over time the circumstances of their loved one's death and explore tactics for dealing with their grief.
With the rare exceptions noted above, the book is a very good and comprehensive study of sexual assault homicide investigation and will be of great use to law enforcement officers, forensic laboratorians, forensic pathologists, forensic anthropologists, attorneys, and others.

AUTHOR'S RESPONSE
I appreciate that Dr. Davis took the time to review this 800-Page text and found it to be a very good and comprehensive study of sexual assault homicide investigation. However, I would point out that the reference to Chapter 6 regarding Homosexual Assault in which, Dr. Davis stated, "Such a statement needs a reference or attribution, but none is present". What Dr. Davis does not take into account or realize is that this statement is based upon the author's personal experience with these type cases and his own extensive personal research into such events. Any attribution would be to the author and not to some theoretical research project or abstract data based on some hypothetical thesis. This information was based on the first and only complete chapter on homosexual homicide ever presented in a homicide textbook entitled Practical Homicide Investigation: Tactics, Procedures, and Forensic Techniques THIRD EDITION.
Dr. Davis's other criticism was based on the author's statement that the investigator "may make a conscious decision to spare the family and allow them to believe the death to be a suicide. (and/or accident)" Dr. Davis has conveniently disregarded the authors specific reference"
"However, in the official police report the death should be properly classified as accidental. Under certain circumstances, this action might be an entirely appropriate alternative. I offer this personal advice as a veteran homicide cop. Whatever course of action you decide, "Just make sure you do the right thing."
This statement of fact was based on an actual event in which the family was spared the "truth" and embarrassment of an event that would have been sexual in nature. The death was properly classified as an accident and was attributed to a "Dungeons and Dragons" game gone wrong.
In the real world of death investigation, and not in some hypothetical environment, the bottom line is protection and concern of the survivors and that is why "We Work For God."

I met Vern Geberth approximately ten years ago after being assigned to the Homicide Section of the St. Louis Police Department, and being fortunate enough to attend his Practical Homicide Investigation seminar. In the seminar he covered the basic information relative to conducting a Homicide Investigation and he gave you a copy of his book to keep with you.
Some three years later I attended Vern's Advanced Practical Homicide Investigation: Tactics, Procedures and Forensic Techniques. He reiterated the basics of Homicide investigation and included additional information on the advancement of forensic science and how they could assist an investigator in reaching a successful conclusion to the case. He covered the investigation, the evidence, the arrest, court preparation and testifying in court. He covered it all. Again, he gave you a copy of his book (Third Edition) to keep with you.
I keep both books in my desk at work and have referenced them many times on various cases. I look to make sure that I have not missed something during the investigation or is there another way or angle I could try. Is there a similar case in his book(s) that I might review and get a different perspective on the facts of the case. And every time I open the book(s) I see Vern's motto, " WE WORK FOR GOD".
Now comes Vern's new book, Sex Related Homicide and Death Investigation, Practical and Clinical Perspectives. The book covers everything from Human Sexuality to Sexual Deviance, the Psychological profile of sexual predators, what makes them tick, and why they do the things they do. But it also covers the mistakes the predator makes, the evidence he/she leaves behind and the little signature that individualizes him/her. Vern gives you a guideline in how to recognize and identify the type of Sexual Homicide you are dealing with. A guideline on what is evidence and how to use it during the investigation. To put it simply this is a "How To Book."
Through one's life you will hear what a great person or what a great job someone does, I don't think there is such a thing as a "GREAT" person or a great job. I think there are just simple men/women who do great things when given the training, knowledge and tools to accomplish their goals. In the field of law enforcement, especially Homicide Investigation, Vern's Sex Related Homicide and Death Investigation, Practical and Clinical Perspectives is definitely one of those tools. It is a must read and keep it for reference.

There is no better literature on "How To" subjects than those written by an author that has the experience to share his vast knowledge. For over 35 years Vernon Geberth has compiled an enormous amount of information on the subject of how to handle and investigate a sex related homicide, from occurrence through prosecution, to post-incarceration behavior.
The textbook is a "Home Depot" type manual that literally covers it all and is so esoteric one need go no further regarding the basics. This book will remain at the top of sex related homicide investigation resources for many years to come. Any experienced investigator will admit that this comprehensive text has a lot of information related to similar sexual homicides one may encounter and can use to help solve the death.
Our job in solving death investigations is all about communication. This book communicates what is needed to be successful in bringing about justice and truth for the victims of such crimes.

I first met the author 17 years ago as he was traveling around the country presenting his well-respected Practical Homicide Investigation seminar to police, crime scene and medical examiner personnel. As I listened to his presentation, I was immediately hooked and have since become honored to call Vernon a mentor and good friend. Vernon has shared his experiences as a top street cop, first line supervisor, commander, administrator, educator and forensic consultant.
I personally utilize all of Vernon's books as my "Bibles": Practical Homicide Investigation: Tactics, Procedures and Forensic Techniques (1st, 2nd, & 3rd Editions), Practical Homicide Investigation Checklist and Field Guide, and The Sex Related Homicide and Death Investigation textbook. Each member of our Major Crime Unit and Cold Case Unit have attended Vernon's training schools and have Vernon's text books as a constant reference source. Furthermore, when supervisors and administrators are assigned to provide oversight to these units, they are encouraged to attend Vernon's seminars and read his textbooks, as he is truly THE master in these topic areas.
I have personally reviewed all of Vernon's books and find it necessary to comment on Sex Related Homicide and Death Investigation. This 804-page text is a tremendously thorough and well-researched account of the sophisticated investigations necessary to resolve these very important cases. This resolution is needed for the victim and society as a whole. I find this book to be extremely helpful in sharing the accepted protocol on proper crime scene procedure, evidence collection and testing, investigative analysis, fantasy and linked criminal events, trophy rooms, medical illustration, theory of transfer and exchange and the equivocal death investigation, to name a few. The equivocal death investigation occurs when the manner of death is open to interpretation. These cases are often the most difficult and time consuming to resolve. Vernon identifies factual data and the process for their proper disposition. This book is truly a work of art. It is very interesting, instructive and a good read. The author is able to take the most complicated issues and logically explain them through the ease of examples, photographs and illustrations.
I am a 23-year veteran police officer having spent the last 19 years investigating sexual assaults and homicide cases. I have never identified an area of Vernon's work that I disagreed with. My contemporaries are all "disciples" of Vernon's Practical Homicide Investigation class and are very interested in investigating these sensitive cases right the first time as a result of our training by Vernon.
We all use these books as the ultimate reference guide. With this text, Vernon has raised the bar in conducting sex related death investigations. He has taken this "taboo" topic in our society and has presented it intelligently through his Human Sexuality and Sexual Deviance chapter. Vernon quite appropriately identifies the need to properly understand the psychology of Sexual relations in order to conduct a complete death investigation.
In closing, Sex Related Homicide and Death Investigation is a must for all homicide and sex crimes detectives and investigators, crimes scene technicians, uniformed police officers, prosecutors and medical examiner personnel. This book has become the standard and if we are to continue winning the war on violent crime, we must keep current if we don't, I know that the defense will!

Review of Chapter 14, Sex-Related Homicide and Death Investigation
Psychopathy is a personality disorder defined by a cluster of interpersonal, affective, lifestyle, and antisocial characteristics with serious, negative consequences for society. These features generally are measured by the Psychopathy Checklist Revised (PCL-R), which views psychopaths as egocentric, grandiose, arrogant, deceitful, manipulative, shallow, callous, impulsive, and sensation-seeking individuals who readily violate social norms and obligations without any sense of shame, guilt, or remorse. Among its more devastating features are a callous disregard for the rights of others and a propensity for predatory behavior and violence. Given these characteristics, as well as the extensive empirical literature on its association with criminal behavior, it is not surprising that psychopathy is widely regarded as one of the most important clinical disorders in the criminal justice system, particularly with respect to understanding and predicting criminal behavior. However, it is only recently that academic and applied theory and research on psychopathy have found their way into law enforcement. While it is true that some authors and commentators, many of them current or former criminal investigators, have discussed psychopathy with reference to serious crime, especially serial murder, the discussions often are impressionist and presented without serious appreciation of the scientific literature. This certainly is not the case with Vernon Geberth's recently published compendium, Sex-Related Homicide and Death Investigation (CRC Press, 2003).
Most criminal investigators are familiar with Geberth's highly respected work on criminal investigation and because this is not my field of expertise I leave to the real experts the evaluations of Geberth's latest book. However, I am familiar with the area of psychopathy, and I will confine my comments to the chapter entitled "Psychopathic Sexual Sadism-A Clinical Study."
Unlike many investigators, Geberth has paid close attention to the scientific literature on the PCL-R conception of psychopathy and, by integrating it with his own extensive experience and clinical insights, has produced an outstanding chapter on practical applications to criminal investigation. His discussions of the differences among several apparently related concepts-psychopathy, sociopathy, and antisocial personality disorder-are right on the mark, as is his appreciation of the behavior of psychopaths during the investigative process. I particularly was impressed by his discussion of their behavior during interviews and interrogations, and by his suggestions about how investigators might handle such sessions. Some investigators with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), and intelligence agencies in North America and several other countries, currently are developing their own protocols for applying psychopathy to crime scene analysis, interviewing, and intelligence work. Their efforts are consistent with Geberth's discussions and advice, and there is little doubt that they will derive considerable benefit from his work. Indeed, the topic of Geberth's book may be sexual homicide, but any investigator who deals with psychopaths in any capacity would do well to become familiar with his work.
The section on the psychology of evil was very interesting and informative. Another section illustrates how an experienced and perceptive investigator can arrive at conclusions that are congruent with, or even anticipate, empirical research. I refer to Geberth's comments that the combination of psychopathy and deviant sexual arousal is especially dangerous. While this may not be news to other investigators, it is worth pointing out that it is only recently that researchers have demonstrated the extreme importance of this combination for explaining sexual recidivism and violence in both adult and adolescent sex offenders. Geberth has demonstrated that criminal investigators can learn much from the researchers; clearly, the opposite also is true.
In summary, the chapter is a must read for anyone who wishes to apply the concept of psychopathy to criminal investigation in particular, and to law enforcement in general.

Vernon Geberth's book is probably the best book I have ever read in this topic area. Vern did an excellent job of putting this book together. He covers the investigation of sex-related homicide and the psychological aspects of sex related death. More importantly he discusses the forensic clinical aspect of this type of crime. His detailed description of terminology, case example and references provide the reader with in?depth knowledge of investigation of sexual related death.
I am considering putting this book on my list of "required reading" for my graduate classes next spring semester. I am also going to use this book for "suggested reading" for my law school classes.

Vernon Geberth did not just write a book entitled Sex-Related Homicide and Death Investigation: Practical and Clinical Perspectives. He created a portable, hand held training simulator for the response to and investigation of the sex-related homicide.
As the reader makes his way through each chapter, you are hit with the same initial shock and revulsion of a sex-related homicide scene. By providing the reader with dozens of photos, analysis, techniques and checklists, Geberth brings you as close to a real time scene as possible. In creating this atmosphere Vernon prepares the reader, whether cop or prosecutor, when called upon to investigate the sex-related homicide, to professionally deal with the depravity and inhumanity of this evil act and to maintain your professional objective and in so doing focus your efforts toward the only goal that matters " to see that justice is done not only for the deceased but fore the surviving family as well."

As a fellow homicide investigator, and the commander of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Section, I found Vernon's insight to be completely consistent with my observations as the commander of the Sex Crime Unit, as well as the Homicide Section. While many other experts have noted the correlation between sex and violence, Vern takes these theories and gives them context, by presenting case studies with illuminating analyses.
Vernon correctly states when discussing (rape) murders, " as a practical matter, the police are dealing with a rapist who has killed and not a murderer who has raped." In short, Sex-Related Homicide and Death Investigation belongs on the desk of every single homicide detective, sex crimes investigator, and police administrator.

Vernon J. Geberth's new investigative text, Sex-Related Homicide and Death Investigation, will be a tremendous asset to investigators and prosecutors of sexual predators. His methodical approach to case analysis, augmented with crime scene photographs, documents the step by step investigative procedure used in solving numerous sexually motivated murders. Detective Commander Geberth also provides the reader with his unique in-depth insight into the psychological motivation of the sexual deviant, explaining why the killer has a need to dominate, manipulate, degrade and torture victims.
This book should be a mandatory reference work, not only for prosecutors and homicide detectives, but also for juvenile and general sex crimes investigators. The information provided describing the abnormal evolution of these sadistic killers will greatly assist in identifying and questioning homicide suspects and sexual offenders of all ages and stages of development.

I first met Vernon J. Geberth in 1979 when I was serving as a criminologist and Behavioral Science Unit Instructor at the FBI Academy located at Quantico, Virginia. Vernon had come to the 119th session of the FBINA as a selected student representative of the New York City Police Department and had enrolled in my elective course entitled, Applied Criminology from the Police Perspective. In reviewing my prospective class list I noted that Vern was a Detective Sergeant in the 7th Homicide Division in the South Bronx, which routinely handled over 200 homicide investigations a year. I thought to myself, "I'd better be on my toes during this course as this guy probably has more homicide experience than the entire class of 50 experienced law enforcement officers." In reality, Vernon may have had more experience in death investigation and violent crime matters than the entire total 250 attendees of the 119th Session of the FBINA. In fact, Vern later went on to become a Lieutenant Commander and The Commanding Officer of the Bronx Homicide Task Force, which conducted over 400 homicide investigations a year.
My first personal contact with Vernon came when he entered my office to make a complaint. Part of the Applied Criminology course requirement was to do a research paper on an approved topic. I was not surprised that Vernon wanted to do his paper on homicide. Vern sternly advised that our FBI library, known as the Learning Resource Center, was grossly deficient in reference material on the topic of homicide and related death investigation matters. I knew Vernon was right on target in his complaint as most of this material was limited as well as dated. Assuming the role of the "fed" who has been put on the spot by a "local cop," I countered Vern's position and suggested he "wing it" based on his vast experience in the Bronx. I also threw him the challenge that a man of his experience could and should write his own book on homicide. Several years later I received an autographed copy of Practical Homicide Investigation: Tactics, Procedures, and Forensic Techniques in the mail and found it to be the most authoritative text in the field of homicide and death investigation at the time of it's printing. It is now in it's third edition and still leads the pack as the 'Bible of Homicide Investigation.'
Whereas his first book was far beyond that which would be necessary to prove his expertise in the field of homicide, Vernon has now come forward with Sex-Related Homicide and Death Investigation. This amazing book transcends his first effort. It is truly a chronicle of practical and clinical case studies, combined with invaluable investigative guidelines, that takes the reader to another level of knowledge in this unique field. It represents an accomplishment that no other author has yet achieved.
In summary, I can only say that Vernon J. Geberth has done it all in the field of homicide and death investigation. Yet, he has gone beyond that outstanding achievement by passing on his knowledge and expertise to other law enforcement and related professional and academic communities with the publication of these two brilliant books. This is a feat that is rarely accomplished by others in his field. I congratulate him on his unique contribution. I cannot begin to imagine what he will come up with next!

Vernon Geberth's "Sex-Related Homicide and Death Investigation" is by far the most detailed and informative resource a homicide and sex crimes investigator could wish for. The quality of this work reflects the high professional standards set by Geberth with his Practical Homicide Investigation series. There are other textbooks available, but only Geberth has earned the level of respect and admiration of homicide investigators around the world that his works are referred to as "the bible" of homicide investigations.
"Sex-Related Homicide and Death Investigation" clearly demonstrates Geberth's talent for translating the most horrific crimes imaginable into an accurately documented and easily understood resource for those involved in the investigation of violent crimes. If I can't have Geberth himself standing next to me at a crime scene, at least I know that his works will never be more than an arm's reach away.

There certainly is no better writer on homicide investigation than Vernon Geberth. His proven case investigation experience and knowledge are shared in an understandable manner. You can trust what he has written in his new book about sexual homicide. It is a book clearly written by a real cop for the real cops -- a practical and reliable book to be included in all professional homicide investigators' libraries.

Vernon J. Geberth has made a major contribution in this most outstanding and comprehensive treatise. During my tenure as Homicide Bureau Chief, in the Bronx County District Attorney's Office, I had the great pleasure of working closely with Vernon J. Geberth, when he was the Commanding Office of the Bronx Homicide Task Force. Commander Geberth's extensive knowledge, unmatched expertise, and boundless creativity with homicide investigations was responsible for the successful prosecution of countless homicides in Bronx County, I had the good fortune of having Commander Geberth, during my watch, supervising the homicide investigations. Geberth's publications in the field of homicide investigation, afford all professionals, the benefit of his vast knowledge and experience on the subject.
Vernon J Geberth's earlier publication, Practical Homicide Investigation, Third Edition, is the most respected, outstanding and comprehensive encyclopedia on the tactics, procedures and forensic technology of homicide investigations. Geberth has recognized the uniqueness of a sex-related death investigation and the unfortunate nationwide increase in this type of homicide. Now, in his new text, Sex-Related Homicide and Death Investigation, Geberth focuses, exclusively, on the investigation, and those miscreants who perpetrate violent sex-related deaths. This, over eight hundred page treatise, provides a comprehensive and practical resource text to all professionals involved in sex?related homicide and death investigations.
Commander Geberth has succeeded in the impossible task of taking his thirty-five years of experience, investigating literally thousands of homicides and consulting, nationwide, with experts in forensic science and criminal investigation, and making a comprehensive and practical resource text that will serve as an investigative guide and clinical reference for the professional who is dedicated to resolve sex-related homicides and deaths.
Sex-Related Homicide and Death Investigation explains every aspect of a sex related homicide investigation with an easily understood, how-to approach, complete with do's and don't's from a professional who has been there. This treatise covers the basics, as well as the cutting edge forensic techniques available, along with case studies and practical examples of the psychopathology involved and clinical considerations needed, to understand the significance of the behaviors of the sexual offender.
It is my opinion, that Sex-Related Homicide and Death Investigation is a "must buy" for the professional involved with the investigation and prosecution of sex-related homicides, and is an essential addition to Vernon J. Geberth's, most respected, Practical Homicide Investigation, Third Edition.

Sex-Related Homicide and Death Investigation is a must read for every profiler, homicide and sex crimes detective, social worker, prosecutor, researcher, and student of sexual homicide. With both formal education and a wealth of experience, Vernon Geberth delivers an easy to read, straight-forward look into the minds of sexual killers. The book delves not only into the psyche of these offenders but also addresses how to catch them. Horrific case after horrific case is presented to demonstrate how these killers gain access to their victims, why they do it, and how police can successfully investigate. In addition, Geberth addresses the wider problem of how a lack of personal responsbility in this society permits the type of narcissistic and psychopathic behavior displayed by sexual murderers. Everyone serious about examining sex-related homicides should read and re-read this excellent book.

The key word in the title of Vernon's book is "Practical", as it is the key in his first book, Practical Homicide Investigation: Tactics, Procedures, and Forensic Techniques, and in his Practical Homicide Investigation Seminars. Vernon has combined his years of experience, training and research to present the reader with an integrated text to use in sex-related death investigations. From the case presentations and underlying methodologies to the reference lists for crime scenes and investigative follow-up, this book is an investigative aid that you will want to add to your crime scene kit. While the book looks great on your office shelf, its real value will shine in the trenches of the death scenes that you work.
To solve murders, both traditional and bizarre, investigators look for the motives behind the crimes. We all know that sex is a dominant motive driving many of the murders that we investigate. The first two chapters of the book familiarize the reader with the investigative significance of sexual deviance and remind us to not let our logic impede our comprehension of the "perp's logic" that is driving the perpetrator during a murder. Vernon then takes us to the crimes scenes of numerous examples of sexually-motivated deaths and, with the expertise that only a murder cop who has investigated and consulted on 8,000 cases can do, explains the case and the vital investigative strategies used to resolve the cases. Hopefully you will never be called to the scene of a homicide committed by a psychopathic sexual sadist such as David Ray in Chapter 12 or Bittaker and Norris depicted in Chapter 14. If you are called to such a scene and you have prepared yourself with Vernon's book, you will recognize what you are facing and what you need to do to resolve the case.
It is hard to pick a favorite chapter when all of the information is so crucial, but Chapter 13, Investigative Analysis: Criminal Personality Profiling and the Signature Aspect, is a very enlightening view of the concept. As Vernon points out, "detectives and criminal investigators routinely employ these techniques in their investigation of violent crime on a case-by-case basis." The explanation, suggested application and the cases presented in Chapter 13 illustrate that the most effective homicide investigators are the ones who supplement their experiences with knowledge, flexibility and common sense.
Vernon's compassion for resolving murder cases continues to shine in this latest book, his gift to the men and women entrusted with the responsibility of investigating death cases. I highly recommend it to all professionals involved in the investigation and prosecution of homicide cases. His passion for his work inspires me to approach every case with the conviction and goal to find the truth and see that justice is done. With God's help, Vernon's guidance and our own commitment, we can make sure that the victims of violent death have a champion in their corner.

Vernon Geberth has provided law enforcement with another major contribution with his book "Sex-Related Homicide and Death Investigation-Practical and Clinical Perspectives." The text is specific to death investigation, up to date, state of the art, accurate and easy to read. Although the material is oriented towards the serious homicide investigator it is valuable to all police personnel (uniformed and non-uniformed), because of its valuable insight into crime scene investigation and preservation by the initial responding officers as well as its contribution to in enhancing any officer who wishes to advance thru the ranks.
In addition to providing valuable insight to the initial responding officers in the preservation of the crime scene it provides knowledge to ancillary police personnel as they may be called upon to assist the chief crime scene investigator.
The case material is reflective of Geberth's remarkable insight into aberrant human behavior and the significance of such concepts as linkage and "linkage blindness" in investigative protocol. The concepts of "signature" and profiling are expanded and built on sound psychological principals. The assessment of psychopathy and sociopathic personality represents the latest understanding of both psychological and law enforcement perspectives.
The section on child related homicide is especially timely and one of the most comprehensive presentations I have seen anywhere. In each section the author has integrated behavioral aspects with a contemporary analysis of state of the art criminal forensic techniques. He has consulted the major contributors to each subject allowing the reader a comprehensive view of the work of leaders in the fields of both law enforcement and psychology.
There are so many seemingly subtle and direct admonitions and directives that one has to read this book thoroughly to realize how thoroughly researched the material is. Properly studied, this volume will not only keep the homicide investigator out of trouble but will enhance his investigative ability enormously contributing to outcomes.
The specific suggestions for interrogation have proven their value over time in countless cases. For example, setting personal feelings aside and allowing the suspect to develop his subterfuge and perception of being "smarter" than the police has proven enormously effective in case after case.
The chapter on crime scene investigation is the best I have seen in the forensic literature, being clearly written, concise, contemporary and comprehensive. This chapter alone is worth the purchase of the book.
As a former biochemist I found the chapter on DNA well researched and very practical. The newest techniques for utilizing DNA are expanded and discussed along with the historical development of this remarkable forensic technique. The author demonstrates how DNA is the most important advance in law enforcement since fingerprinting and the text comes alive with his enthusiasm and practical sense of application. The reader is transported to the crime scene where the complex mysteries become commonplace.
The "hard science," techniques of preserving and analyzing evidence and administrative procedures are interwoven with the behavioral aspects of a large assortment of crimes. This allows the reader to gain an understanding for a solid foundation to prosecute especially with regard to crime scene linkage and signature.
The thought processes of a serial rapist or killer are just one example of how the author integrates material from various sources including the updated concepts of criminal behavioral profiling and its associated psychodynamics, signature and "MO," with the issues of control, dominance and sadism.
Throughout the book there are references to recent Supreme Court decisions regarding issues associated with search warrants and the involuntary confinement of sexually violent predators, as well as legal defense tactics in use, all of which compliment the investigating officer's repertoire of knowledge.
This book took courage to write and the author does not mince words or principles! This volume is a must for every homicide detective and should be studied daily. "Sex-Related Homicide and Death Investigation" is the most comprehensive and up to date text regarding sexual death investigation that I have come across in the forensic and psychiatric literature. This book is a gift to the law enforcement community and a contribution of historical importance.

Vernon J. Geberth, a former Lieutenant Commander of the Bronx Homicide Squad is a legend to all veteran police reporters. It's not surprising that journalists turn to Geberth for a better understanding of the murder cases they report on. I have known Geberth for over 20 years and he has provided law enforcement investigators and police reporters with the most comprehensive and insightful examples of the reality of murder and death investigation
Geberth has almost 40 years of practical police experience having put in 23 years on the NYPD as a premier homicide investigator. When he retired from the New York City Police Department, Geberth continued his quest to contribute his expertise to others revising his acclaimed Practical Homicide Investigation textbook, which is recognized as the Bible of homicide investigation. He has been involved in the investigations of 8,000 homicide cases.
Vernons new textbook entitled, Sex-Related Homicide and Death Investigation: Practical and Clinical Perspectives, is an incredible 800-page book that covers a number of subjects far beyond Practical Homicide Investigation. His vast investigative experience is evident in the clear explanations he offers regarding how the mind of a sexual predator functions and the most recent technology available to bring these unique and very difficult investigations to a successful conclusion.

Vernon has bridged the gap between homicide investigations and sex related deaths by underscoring the need for investigators to have a keen understanding of human behavior patterns and the unique characteristics of sex-related homicides.
His vast investigative experience is evident in the clear explanations he offers regarding how the mind of a sexual predator functions and the most recent technology available to bring these unique and very difficult investigations to a successful conclusion.
Vernon has included a very comprehensive set of guidelines for the investigator based on his years of experience in homicide and sexual offense investigations.
In the book Mr. Geberth provides the journal of a serial rapist, which gives the investigator insight into the complex mind of a sexual predator. The book offers many case histories of different types of sex offenders, many of which are from investigations Geberth, himself, conducted.

Vernon Geberth has written a new testament to the "Bible of homicide investigation." The literature in this area has been sparse and difficult to locate at best. In this book Vernon draws together many various disciplines to make a complete resource and reference book for investigators and prosecutors.
Several experienced prosecutors in our Violent Crimes division have reviewed this book. All have been impressed with the content but more importantly they have been impressed with the context. They way the material is presented and information woven through the various disciplines has shed new light on the subjects and presented new ways to prosecute and investigate these cases.
As the prosecutor in the David Parker Ray case, which is featured in Chapter 12, I wish I had had this book as a reference before that case broke in 1999.
This book is a "must have" (not just "must read") for any detective or prosecutor who deals with these types of cases.
